Privacy Policy
The short version. Siftern has no accounts, no ads, no analytics and no tracking. Your applications, notes, contacts and resume stay on your devices and in your own iCloud, where the developer cannot read them. Your email is read on your Mac only and never leaves it. The one thing that reaches the developer is a report you choose to send with "Report an Issue".
Who this covers
This policy covers the Siftern app for Mac, iPhone and iPad, made by Connor Dickinson ("Siftern", "I"). Siftern helps students track internship applications in investment banking and consulting.
What stays on your devices and in your iCloud
Everything you put into Siftern is stored on your device. If you are signed in to iCloud, Apple syncs it between your own devices through your private iCloud storage. I have no access to it. This includes:
- the applications you track, their progress and the offices you chose;
- your bookmarks;
- your draft answers to application questions;
- the contacts you save for a firm (names, emails, notes);
- your resume PDF;
- your profile: name, school, class year, email, phone, LinkedIn address, and your answers to the first-run questions.
Backups you save with "Save a Backup" are files you keep wherever you choose. Siftern does not send them anywhere.
On a Mac, you can turn on Siftern's extension for the Apple Mail app. When it is on, Mail hands each new message to the extension, which checks it on your Mac for recruiting updates from firms in Siftern's database and for messages from contacts you saved. This check runs entirely on your Mac. No email content is uploaded, stored, or sent to me or to anyone else. The only thing Siftern keeps is a small note such as "JPMorgan, application received, today", which updates your tracker and syncs to your other devices through your own iCloud.
The extension is optional, but recommended: it is what lets Siftern update your tracker for you when a firm writes back. You can turn it off at any time in Mail's settings. Siftern on iPhone and iPad does not read email.
What reaches the developer
Reports you send. If you use "Report an Issue" on a program, Siftern sends me the program it is about, the kind of problem you picked, any details you type, and the app version. Apple's CloudKit service stores the report and attaches an anonymous identifier for your iCloud account. That identifier does not tell me your name, email address or Apple Account. Please do not put personal information in the details box. I use reports only to correct Siftern's program information.
Nothing else is collected. Siftern contains no analytics, no advertising, and no third-party tracking code, and I do not sell or share data with anyone.
Information Siftern downloads
Siftern downloads its list of internship programs, and a short daily finance summary, from a public database hosted by Apple's CloudKit. These downloads do not include any of your information.
Links and notifications
Application links open the firm's own website in your browser. Those sites have their own privacy policies. Notifications are created on your device and are not sent through any outside service.
Apple's role
iCloud sync and CloudKit are run by Apple and are covered by Apple's privacy policy.
Deleting your data
- Remove any application, bookmark, contact, draft or resume inside the app.
- Delete everything Siftern has stored in iCloud: on a Mac, System Settings → your name → iCloud → Manage → Siftern → Delete. On iPhone or iPad, Settings → your name → iCloud → Storage → Siftern.
- Deleting the app removes its data from that device.
- To have a report you sent removed, email me at the address below.
Children
Siftern is intended for college students and is not directed at children under 13.
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version will be posted on this page with a new effective date.
